Chapter 172.
Lunch proceeded in a generally calm manner, largely due to the quality of Clarissaâs cooking. Her home-made pizzas were irresistible, and her chocolate nut sundaes actually tasted even better than they looked â which was quite an achievement. Miki sat next to Bobby and fed him â the mittens prevented him from holding anything - much to his chagrin and the othersâ amusement. Only Harriett was a little out of control, her excess of energy preventing her from sitting in a chair for more than a few seconds at a time, until she was eventually released into the garden, where she spent her time alternately feeding ice-cream to the next doorâs cat, and chasing him when he had had enough. Eventually MĂ©lisande asked to leave the table, in accordance with an established rule of the household, and the others followed. Whilst her four friends followed Harriett outside, Clarissa and Nicole cleared the table and went into the kitchen to do the washing-up, leaving Bobby and Miki together in the living-room.
âMellie loved her present. You obviously know her taste well. Have you been friends for long?â asked Miki, politely, but curious about the exact nature of their relationship.
âWell, not really that longâŠâ
âWhere did you meet?â
âEr⊠At Pittâs Wood riding schoolâŠâ
âOh! You ride! So do I. I donât know Pittâs Wood. We live nearer Fleetford, so I always go there. How long have you been riding?â
âNo, I, er⊠I donât really rideâŠitâs Mellie that rides, IâŠâ
âOh. So whatâs the connection with Pittâs Wood?â
âWell, I, erâŠwill be working there later this yearâŠâ
âAsâŠ?â
âOh, you know, general stuffâŠadmin sort of thingsâŠâ
This was getting difficult. Miki could see she was making him uncomfortable. But it was sort of fun.
âOne of those ladies mentioned something about a boot boy outfitâŠâ
âOh, yeahâŠthat tooâŠâ
âYouâll be cleaning boots for the riders?â
âSometimesâŠyes.â
âThatâs a really useful job.â
This was getting more and more interesting.
âSo you have to wear a special uniform for that?â
âYesâŠit goes with the job.
âSo⊠Whatâs with today's outfit? I mean, you look fantastic. Iâm fascinated. What is it, exactly?â
Nicoleâs voice broke in from the kitchen.
âTell Miki what itâs called, Bobby. Remember?â
Miki looked at him expectantly.
âGo on.â
âErâŠyeahâŠitâsâŠitâs a, erâŠâ
âHave you forgotten?â
âNo aunt. â He steeled himself. He couldnât look her in the face. He managed to
mumble, âItâs a superfine latex d-dance hotpants unitardâŠâ
âSpeak up, Bobby!â from the kitchen.
âItâs a âŠsuperfine latex dance hotpants unitard,â he blurted, ears on fire.
âWow.â Miki feigned astonishment. âI thought it might be latex. But youâve really gone the whole hog, Bobby. I mean, the socks! And the cute headband. And everything! Gorgeous! And those mittensâŠare they latex too?â
Bobby glowered. âYes...â
Nicole appeared at the kitchen door. âThat was my idea. Bobbyâs been pestering me for some slightly more girly outfits. His boot boy uniformâs very boyish. So my supplier came up with this. I think it suits him really well.â
âI agree.â
âSee Bobby? Mikiâs got good taste. Listen to her. Thereâs no reason to be shy. Yes, I put him in mitts so he canât mess around with it. You know what boys are like â obsessed with their appearance. Worse than girls!â
âItâs true, Nicole. Bobby, you look great. Donât change anything. Then maybe your aunt will let you take your mitts off.â
âOops. Canât do that. Padlocks. Left the key at home, Iâm afraidâŠâ
âAuntie!â
âSorry. Didnât think youâd need to take them offâŠâ
âBut my skirt keeps riding upâŠâ
âWell thereâs nothing to see except you little frilly shortsâŠâ
Bobby gave a frustrated sigh.
âMight as well make the most of it, Bobby,â said Miki, stroking his arm condescendingly, as if she were an adult and he was a little boy, instead of their being about the same age. âYouâre a lucky boy to have an auntie who buys you such smart clothes. Whatâs it called again? âSuperfineâŠsomething?â
He glared at her. Nicole looked at him severely. âAnswer Miki, please, BobbyâŠâ
âA superfine latexâŠâ he began, through gritted teeth.
âYes, such beautiful fine latexâŠâ
ââŠunitard danceâŠ.I mean dance hotpants unitardâŠâ
âSuch cute little hotpantsâŠlove the little frillsâŠâ
Before he could stop her, sheâd given the frilling on one leg a playful tug, so that when she let it go the leg-band smacked sharply against his thigh.
âOuch!â
âItâll take all that,â remarked Nicole, blithely. âIâm told that special latex is so tough. You donât have to worry about any accidents with tears or splits⊠â
âJust as well,â smirked Miki, with a meaningful glance at the taut latex. âOh, hereâs MĂ©lisande. Wow! What a posh outfit!â
MĂ©lisande had put on her new breeches and boots over a simple white shirt. She looked natural and beautiful. When she was younger, Clarissa had had a tendency to want to doll her up â makeup, bleached hair and so on â but MĂ©lisandeâs obsession with horses and riding had put paid to all that. She gave Bobby such a loving smile that his heart seemed to miss a beat. In that moment, all his little humiliations evaporated, and his life felt suffused with sunshine.
Her eyes sparkled. âIâm going to wear these for the show, of course. If thatâs all rightâŠâ
âI was hoping you mightâŠâ
âYou look a million dollars, Mellie!â criied Nicole. âClarissa? Come see your beautiful daughterâŠâ
