EASTER BRUNCH DELIGHT
The brunch itself was a delight. The boys ate carefully, one might even say prissily, as they delicately held their forks and spoons and made sure not to spill anything on their frothy dresses. Their movements were occasionally awkward, betraying their nerves and unfamiliarity with all the ribbons and frills. Still, they got their fill of small bunny-shaped pancakes, little sausages, quiches, and fruit cups. The twins also sampled tiny fruit tarts, delicate pastries, and tasty slices of lemon cake. Around them, laughter bubbled, and the clatter of cutlery was punctuated by soft music and the happy chatter of the crowd. Between bites, they whispered a few nervous jokes and laughed quietly, gradually getting used to all the stares.
Throughout the meal, Caitlin and Stephanie beamed at the adorably frocked boys and couldnât resist constantly fussing over every detail of their outfits. The older girls were delighted with the results of their efforts to turn them into perfect Easter darlings, and they enjoyed watching them try to be ladylike as they ate. In one moment, Caitlinâs eyes would sparkle as she gently straightened Jackâs hair bow. In the next, Stephanie would be smoothing Justinâs pink skirt and admonishing him to keep his knees together.
Caitlin gushed, âYou two are just the daintiest little things! I never imagined youâd look so adorable.â
Stephanie piled on with a mischievous grin, âWe should have signed you up for an Easter pageant!â
Caitlin giggled, âThatâs a great idea for next time!â
âNext time?â the twins thought to themselves with a tingle of worry. They both blushed brightly, squirming under all the smothering attention. They really felt like pretty little dolls now, but Caitlin and Stephanie continued their mollycoddling, treating them with protective tenderness. Claire watched it all, enjoying the sight of her new âdaughtersâ being attended to with such relentless but loving care by the older girls. Other guests at surrounding tables watched with amused looks and approving smiles.
Yet, amid all the playful fussing, the two sissified lads sensed genuine affection, which softened their embarrassment and brought a bit of comfort. Despite their excruciating self-consciousness, Jack and Justin traded shy glances. At least a part of them still seemed to be enjoying all this girlish pampering and doting.
Then, somewhat to their chagrin, a couple of girls from their class at school found them, drawn by curiosity and sparkling mischief. Their eyes went wide as they took in the twinsâ feminine transformations. They stifled giggles, but their smiles were more kind than mocking.
Their classmate Sabrina grinned and spoke first, âYou two look like you stepped out of a princess storybook!â She teased, âJack, I love your nails!â
Anna chimed in, âI canât believe you wore those dresses!â She added, âJustin, you look so pretty in pink!â
Jackâs cheeks burned, and Justin glanced shyly at the girls, but there was a bit of warmth in their teasing.
Sabrina softened a bit, âI heard what you did at Christmas too. You know, itâs sweet you went this far to do something nice for your mother again!â
Anna added, âI hope you decide to dress up for school sometime⌠it would be fun to take you shopping!â
The twins managed hesitant smiles, feeling a sense of acceptance. The girlsâ gentle teasing faded into affectionate chatter as they appreciated the boyâs willingness to be good sports.
When their classmates walked away, the creeping realization hit them that this would definitely be the talk at school come Monday. Jack grimaced, whispering, âTheyâre going to have a field day with this.â
Justin shrugged with an attempt at bravado, a nervous smile tugging at his lips. âWell, too late to worry about it now⌠we might as well own it!â
Jack rolled his eyes but chuckled, âMonday ought to be interesting.â
As the meal wound down, one of the event hosts approached Claire, her eyes twinkling. âWould your âdaughtersâ mind helping us out in handing out treats to the children?â she asked, âit seems several of the younger girls are just fascinated by them.â The lady held out two white wicker baskets lined with pastel ribbons and heaped with foil-wrapped chocolate eggs. Jack and Justin hesitated, exchanging a look of wide-eyed uncertainty.
Before Claire could answer, Caitlin chimed in, âTheyâd love to! Wouldnât you?â
Grimacing slightly, but never ones to back down, the sissified boys blushed but nodded gamely.
Soon enough, they were gently nudged to their feet and handed their baskets. As they began delivering the treats, the warm approval of the ladies and older girls in the crowd made Jackâs nerves dissolve into a smile. The twins made their rounds in their over-the-top Easter frocks, distributing chocolate eggs to the little girls. Jack and Justin decided to go all in, and they did some playful twirls to show off their dresses to the delight of the younger guests. Little hands eagerly reached for treats as Jack and Justin sweetly leaned into their roles, and Claire watched approvingly.
As the Easter Brunch began to wrap up, Jack and Justin had almost forgotten their initial embarrassment. When it was time to go, Jack glanced at Justin, and both boys grinned. They were at the same time relieved it was over and somewhat amused to be part of such a unique day. It turned out, however, there was one last thing left to do.
