Chapter 283.
Lady Middiford led the way out of the office, which was on South Kennett High Street. She turned left and walked briskly, saying nothing. Thomasina caught up with her and took her arm.
âMummy⊠Please donât be angry. Iâm really sorryâŠâ
âNo youâre not. And Iâm not angry. Actually Iâm rather pleased. You stood up for yourself. You showed strength I hadnât recognised. Iâm rather proud of you, darling.â
She stopped and gave her daughter a hug.
âWeâre going to Robertsâ Tack Shop. I want you to buy a couple of new outfits. Nothing fancy, just good quality standard stuff. You want to stay at Pittâs Wood, right?â
âVery muchâŠâ
âI thought so. So no more showing off. Just fit in. Do you get on with Miss Poole?â
âI think I doâŠnow.â
âThen she doesnât hold grudges?â
âOh, no. Sheâs not that sort at all. Sheâs quite nice and ordinary⊠Very down-to-earth.â
âYes. I see. I think I need to pay her a visit⊠Explain myself. Apologise.â
âWould you do that?â
âShe sounds like someone I could do business with. Also, Iâm interested. Iâve heard some lurid rumours about that place. It rather intrigues me⊠Anyway, after weâve got you some gear Iâll drop you at school. We can talk more tonight if you want to.â
âThanks for understanding, mummyâŠâ
âIâm just glad weâve straightened things out between ourselves. As for Miss Poole, Iâll ring Pittâs Wood and see if I can arrange a meeting.â
A phone call was all it took, and at three that afternoon the two ladies found themselves facing each other across Miss Pooleâs desk.
âItâs good to meet you, Lady Middiford. You have a very talented daughter.â
âI know. You received my solicitorâs letter, I suppose?â
âYes. Iâm very gratefulâŠâ
âYou shouldnât be. What I did was unforgiveable. I realise that now, since my daughter opened up about it all. Miss Poole, I sincerely apologise for my actions, for which I take full responsibility. Also for the tone of my lawyerâs first letter, which was sent without my approval.â
âPlease, forget it. Letâs put it in the past. And please, call me Violet.â
âI appreciate your understanding more than I can say, Violet. And please call me Edith. Now, what about the girl who was dismissed?â
âOh, I let her resign, and gave her a good reference, and three monthsâ pay in lieu of notice. Donât worry about her. There had been other incidents. And sheâs working at another centre now.â
âI see. That does make me feel a little better. I was going to offer some money as compensation.â
âNot necessary, I assure you.â
âWell, in that case Iâll direct it elsewhere. I understand you have a fund for less well-off children, for lessons and clothing. How can I donate?â
âThatâs very kind, Edith. I can send you a link.â
âPlease do.â She paused. âCan I ask you something?â
âOf course, Edith.â
âWell, Iâll be frank. Iâve heard some quite unusual things about Pittâs Wood. I read in the paper something about a Ponyboy? Is that the correct term?â
âAhâŠour PonyboyâŠyes, thatâs right.â
âHe gets ridden like a pony?â
âYes⊠Heâs the nephew of a good friend of mine. He has a regular rider, a girl called MĂ©lisande, the daughter of another friend. They have a real rapportâŠâ
âI see⊠When I heard about it I found the idea rather amusing, for some reason.â
âOh, you did? Iâm pleased. Did Thomasina tell you about yesterday?â
âYesterday? Sunday? What happened yesterday?â
âAh⊠Clearly she hasnât. Well, I should probably let her tell you. But she actually rode Ponyboy. She did several circuits of the courtyard of the Old House on him.â
âShe did?â
âYes. Sheâs a very accomplished horsewoman. She was a little free with the whip, perhaps⊠But Ponyboy was being a bit naughty. Probably thought he could take advantage of her. She soon put him straight on that.â
âShe hasnât mentioned it. Not yet, at least.â
âWell I put her in charge of the pony rides, you see. From now on our Ponyboyâs going to spend most Sunday afternoons giving pony rides for charity. So I thought she should see what it feels like to ride a boy-pony. I think she had quite enjoyed it, actually...â
âGoodness! She didnât say a word! Sheâs such a modest girl. Perhaps even a little shyâŠâ
âWell, I know. Thatâs why I decided to try to bring her out a little. So I gave her a special rather eye-catching riding outfit to wear for supervising the pony rides. Would you like to see a photo?â
She scrolled through her phone and handed it to Lady Middiford, who stared, gasped, and stared some more.â
âIs thatâŠ?â
âLatex? Yes, Edith. I hope I didnât overstep the mark. But actually she adapted very well, and simply got on with her job. I was so impressed.â
âSo thatâs what the smell was!â
âSorry?â
âShe must have been wearing it under her clothes this very morning!â
âReally?â
âThe cheeky monkey! Without telling me!â
âI thought it would suit her, and force her to overcome her self-consciousness. She didnât seem to mind the attention, anyway. Iâm sorry. I should have consulted you first, ButâŠâ
âNo, Violet. Itâs fine. Iâm just amazed she had the confidenceâŠâ
âIt fitted her like a glove.â
âI can see⊠So, she was wearing it this morning, too⊠Oh my god, sheâll be wearing it to school!â
âReally? Oh dear⊠She must like it more than I realisedâŠâ
âIf her teacher finds out... My goodness, how could she be so silly?â
âWell, sheâs got good taste. Our supplier â Fantastex â lives up to their name. The latex is top quality. They made Ponyboyâs pony suit, and they dress our boot boys. Tell her that if she intends to take a more active part in the life of the Centre, Iâd be only too happy to get Cynthia â thatâs the boss - to make her whatever outfits she wants.
âThatâs very kind, Violet⊠I never imagined my innocent daughter wouldâŠ.â She shook her head slowly. âI mean, a latex catsuit? Todayâs been quite a revelation for me, one way and the otherâŠâ
âWell she has a perfect figure. In fact Cynthia thought she'd be ideal for modelling some of their products. I don't know if she'd be up for that...â
âModelling? Modelling latex? I need to get my head around this. Wait till I see her tonight! Iâll have some very pertinent questions for herâŠâ
âActually I think doing some modelling would really help her confidence.â
âYes⊠I suppose it wouldâŠâ She took a deep breath. âViolet. You mentioned the boot boys. Thomasina told me something about them. Thereâs two of them, right?â
âWell, yes. Bobby and Timmy. Actually theyâre doing rather wellâŠâ
âIs it true that these boysâŠhow old are they?â
âSeventeen.â
âYes, seventeen. It is true that these seventeen-year-old boys are employed just for the purpose of cleaning and polishing riding boots?â
âYes⊠And other boots too, sometimesâŠâ
âWhich they do while the owners are wearing them?â
âUsually, yesâŠâ
âOn their knees?â
âWellâŠyesâŠâ
âWhat are they like?â
âWell, Edith, if you care to take a look at that picture on the wall behind the door⊠Yes, that one with the red frame⊠Youâll be able to see both boys wearing their uniforms⊠Theyâre also made by Fantastex.â
Edith rose and approached the picture. Bobby and Tim, both in their pageboy outfits, holding hands outside the boot parlour, and looking rather self-conscious. She stared at itâŠthen turned and smiled.
âItâs such a clever idea! They must be very popular⊠I canât think of a better job for two good-looking young guys like that. They look so sweet, tooâŠâ
âYes. Itâs been good for the Centre, and the boys are well-paid, and thatâs aside from the tips. But in any case they enjoy their work, and are very polite and respectful. Why donât you book a session? Just call at reception and book a date.â
âOh, donât worry. Now Iâve heard a bit more about them, now Iâve seen this photo, I intend to. This was your idea?â
âIâm afraid it wasâŠâ
âYouâre a woman after my own heart.â
âWe also hire them out by the day for general domestic service.â
âExcellent! I used to employ a maid myself at one timeâŠâ
âFunny you should say that, but thereâs an agency⊠ESDS â Egertonâs Special Domestic Services â which might be just up your street. This is run by another friend of mine, Cassandra Egerton. Actually Iâm a sort of partner. The websiteâs private â youâd need to be an approved member â of course we can easily arrange that - but I can show you a brochureâŠâ
She reached into a drawer I her desk and produced a leaflet, which she handed to Lady Middiford. On the front was a picture of a boy in maidâs uniform holding a feather duster. She stared.
âOh my god⊠Heâs so cute⊠Whatâs his name? Philip! And this one inside⊠Darren! Theyâre so sweet! So, I could actually hire these as maids?â
âWhat, Edith? You want two?â
âNo! Now donât be naughty, Violet. You know thatâs not what I mean. Either one would be lovely. And they look so happy! It would brighten my day just to have either one around. They wouldnât actually have to do anything. Well, they could serve drinks, I suppose... And do some dusting with those little feather dusters... But it would be such fun just having them around.â
âIâll speak to Cassandra and get you access to the site. Sheâs away for a few days, so it wonât be till the end of the week. Actually Tim - he's the one on the right in that picture I gave you - Tim's just starting maid training there. It takes about a month to get them to a sufficient standard, but then I hope he'll be on the website too. Oh, Iâm so glad you called in, and that you approve of our little projects.â
âOh, Violet, so am I. Itâs been such a pleasure to meet you. We seem to have so much in common. We must get together soon for a good old chinwag. Iâll invite you for dinner, if youâd like to comeâŠâ
âIâd love to.â
âWonderful! And tonight Iâm going to ask Thomasina all about Sunday! Especially about her new outfit! Perhaps she was just too embarrassed to mention itâŠâ
