By the time they found their mom again, she was ready to check out. Sammy noticed a large box in the cart, but he could not see just what it was, so he followed along, trying every now and again to steal a peek to see if it was anything to do with him. He knew it probably was not, but he could not ignore his curiosity. As they went through the check out, Sammy realized his best opportunity would be when they got back out to the car.
Sure enough, Sammy did learn what the big box was once they got out to the car. His mom put the bags in the trunk, but left the box out.
“What’s that, mom?” Sarah asked.
“Well, I noticed that Sammy is having some trouble with the seatbelts.” Sammy felt a weight in his stomach. “So, I got him this booster seat.”
“Mom!” Sammy protested, but his mom ignored him. She opened up the box, right there in the parking lot, and pulled out what looked to Sammy to be a baby car seat, just in a size that he had never seen before. It was big. Big enough for him. And worse... “It’s pink!” He whined.
“It’s all they had.” His mom replied. “Besides, you have a pink nightie at home.”
“Mom!”
“Sarah, help me get this into the car since Sammy’s not going to help us.”
“It’s like your own special seat, Sammy.” Sarah said. He knew she was over the moon about this, but she was doing a surprisingly good job about hiding it. Had mom mentioned it to her beforehand? Sammy had his suspicions. “Almost set for you!” Sammy sighed and looked around the parking lot. Could he make a run for it? He tried to summon the resolve to do it, but all he managed to do was shuffle his pink striped sneaker slightly away from the car.
“Alright, Sammy. All set for you!” His mom grabbed his wrist and pulled him back over. “Climb up.” With all the enthusiasm of a prisoner at the gallows, Sammy complied, although he got a little boost from his mom. Immediately, she locked him in, the buckle fastening between his thighs. With the added height, he could only touch the floor if he pointed his toes.
“He fits!”
“With room to grow.” Mom added. “Looks like we've found a winner, Sammy.” Rather than sit in the front with her mom, Sarah slid into the back row with Sammy, leaning over to inspect his new car seat.
“What a secure little boy.” She whispered. She only giggled when Sammy glared at her. “Take the scenic route home, mom.” Sarah said. “So Sammy can really get a chance to enjoy his new car seat.”
“Sarah!” Sammy whined.
“Geez, your feet barely even touch the floor, you're so little.” She commented.
“Sarah, be nice to Sammy.” Mom said mildly. “And Sammy, if you didn't realize by now, you're not able to get out of your car seat by yourself, so be nice to Sarah so she'll let you out.” Sarah grinned at Sammy and he sighed. Why did mom have to say it like that? Sarah smiled and leaned in again.
“Face it. You look like a little baby in your car seat. Little baby Sammy.”
“Shuddup.” Sammy whispered.
“Itty bitty Sammykins, all snug and cozy in his car seat.”
“Mom! Sarah’s teasing me!”
“Sarah, stop.” Mom said. “Your brother’s in there for his safety, not so you can make fun of him. Next time, sit up front with me. You two need to be separated.”
They arrived home and Sammy immediately wanted to get out of the car, but Sarah had other plans. She got out of the car and offered to help carry bags in, leaving Sammy stuck wiggling in the car seat, trying to get it to unbuckle. The button would not release, try as he might. He looked over his shoulder, trying to get his mom’s attention, but the seat was too high and he could not twist all that well with the straps holding him securely in place.
At long last, the door opened and Sarah stood there, grinning. Sammy grumbled and tried to unbuckle himself again. It just would not work! There must be some trick to it that Mom had kept secret from him.
“What do we have here?” Sarah asked. Sammy looked away and saw Mom going into the house, leaving him in Sarah’s clutches. He sighed, knowing just how screwed he was without her.
“I’m a little boy who needs his big sister.” Sammy said quickly. He was pretty sure he had never seen his sister grin so broadly. Rather than unbuckle him, however, Sarah fished her phone out of her pocket. “What’s a ten year old even need with a phone?” He muttered.
“Say it again for the camera, itty bitty Sammykins!” She cooed.
“No.” Sarah shrugged.
“I’ll go tell Mom you want to stay in your car seat because you love it so much.” Sammy sighed.
“Sarah.”
“We’re alone, Sammykins.” She said in sing-song.
“Big sister.” He said through clenched teeth.
“Say it nicely for the camera.”
“Why? So you can blackmail me?”
“No, no. I have a million other ways I could blackmail you if I want.” Sarah said. “I just think it’d be cute.” She shrugged. “And it’s the only way to get out before dad gets home.” Sammy sighed, once again running into the obstacle that was Sarah with her mind made up about something.
“Ready?” He asked, rolling his eyes.
“Mhm!” He looked directly at the phone Sarah held up.
“I’m a little boy who needs his big sister.” Sarah grinned and put her phone away.
“Perfect.” With shocking ease, she unbuckled the car seat, releasing her brother. “Can’t believe mom actually bought this for you.” She looked at it in amazement. Sammy just walked toward the house and Sarah ran to catch up.
