It seemed to Sammy that the idea of a one day school week was one of the dumbest ideas ever, especially when it was the last day of school. Try as he might though, he had never succeeded in convincing his parents to let them just skip it.
The fateful morning came and Sammy did not start it on the right foot. He woke with a yelp, realizing that he had overslept and had to leave immediately. As he threw on clothes, he knew that this was some plot by Sarah. Everything was, after all. He barely remembered to toss his nightie in the hamper before rushing.
He charged out of his room and pounded down the stairs. With a yelp, he tripped and fell from the third to last stair to the floor below. It was not much of a fall, bruising his ego more than anything else, but his mom came around the corner.
“I was just coming to wake you up, but clearly you’re awake.” He stood up and straightened his shirt. “Since you still aren’t being careful, I think we need to go back to scooting and crawling on the stairs, mister.”
“But”
“No buts. Until I say otherwise, you will crawl up the stairs and scoot down them on your bottom, understand?”
“Mom! I’m twelve years old!”
“Only a month away from being thirteen” his mom agreed. “So you should be expected to be careful on the stairs. How many times have I told you to, Sammy?”
“I know.”
“This is how you’ll learn. I’ll make sure Sarah knows and you better believe she’ll be enforcing it.” Sammy sighed. He had forgotten that Sarah was effectively in charge for the summer. “Now, have a good day at school.” His mom kissed his cheek. “And don’t let Sarah get to you.”
“Hard to do that when you’ve put her in charge.” Sammy muttered darkly.
Sammy knew that Sarah had something planned for after school, but try as he might, he could not stop time from passing at its normal rate at school. If anything, the fun of it being the last day of school only served to make time gallop past even more quickly. His best friend Gavin noticed his moroseness, but attributed it to him not getting to go to Camp Green Pines with him.
“Maybe I can like sneak you aboard the bus or something? Dude? Earth to Sam?” Gavin suggested over lunch.
“Huh?” Sammy said, lost in his own mind.
“For camp? That’s why you’re all down in the dumps or whatever?”
“Huh? Oh! Uh, yeah” Sammy could not bring himself to tell Gavin the truth, so he tried his best to fake that that was the only reason. He remained distant for the rest of the day, his mind racing as he tried to think of some way, any way to avoid Sarah. She would surely be waiting for him when he left school, but how could he avoid her? They lived together. As the final bell rang, he felt like he was going to his death, as melodramatic a thought as that was.
