For the next few days Jake anxiously waited to see if anything came of that girl Janiceâs promise to save him from a long future in nappies and baby dresses. His mother noticed his listlessness as he played with his rattles and blocks in his play-pen.
She put him in the bouncer to see if a couple of hours in that would improve his mood. In any case, the local children enjoyed watching him through the window as his petticoats fluttered up on each bounce showing off the fancy frills on his nappy cover. It didnât seem to improve his mood.
A week had passed before he heard what sounded like Janiceâs motherâs voice approaching in the corridor. His mother came into the nursery. âYou have visitorsâ, she announced. Janiceâs mother walked in a looked down on Jake in his play-pen. His heart was thumping. Was this his saviour?
She stood back from the door. He saw that she was holding some leather straps. She tugged on them and said âcome along dear!â Janice stumbled into the room on the end of the straps. She was wearing a pink frilly baby-style dress over layers of petticoats. Jake could see the thick nappy beneath the petticoats under the white tights and lace-trimmed nappy cover. He sighed heavily.
Initially her face was hidden by the wide brim on her bonnet but when she was forced to face Jake he could see that a large soother was strapped into her mouth. âNNngggh, nnnggghh, nnnngggghhh!â she blubbered. Her hands were disabled by padded mittens just like his.
âYou have a play-mateâ, his mother told him. The mothers both laughed. Janice was pushed towards Jakeâs play-pen, the gate was opened and she was pushed in. âSit down dearâ, her mother ordered and she did as she was told. Her head was down but she gradually turned so Jake could see her sad face framed by the frills on her bonnet.
âWonât you show Janice your toys sweetie?â his mother prompted. Jake picked up his favourite rattle and held it towards Janice. She glared at it unhappily. She looked up at the women watching expectantly. She unenthusiastically put her mitten through the handle of the rattle, took it and shook. âThere! Youâre going to get on like a house on fire.â
Her mother approached her. âDo we need to keep that soother strapped in or will you be a good baby and keep it in?â she asked. Janice looked conflicted. Jake knew the dilemma. Having it strapped in was very uncomfortable but suc-king on it âvoluntarilyâ was humiliating.
Eventually Janice nodded and her mother removed the straps. She stood back and watched carefully. Janice dutifully suc-ked on the soother a few times. âGood baby! Now if you just keep it there, we wonât need the strap anymore.â
Janice took an embarrassed sideways glance at Jake as she continued to suc-k on her soother. He smiled and gave his soother a good suc-k in solidarity. He picked up a doll and handed it to her, hoping to take her mind off her predicament. Again she looked at it unenthusiastically before giving in to the expected and she took the doll in her mittens.
The mothers went off towards the kitchen. âShe was never one for dolls and dresses when she was littleâ, Janiceâs mother recalled. âNow we can make up for lost time.â She looked back at her daughter sitting in the play-pen in her pink baby dress, matching bonnet and booties, continuing to suc-k on her soother and clutching the pretty doll.
Jake did his best to distract her but there was no doubting Janiceâs depression at finding herself in the same predicament as this boy she had tried to save. She had ended up just giving her own mother ideas.
When the women returned, they had clearly agreed something after a discussion over coffee in the kitchen. Janiceâs mother explained. âYou will stay here with Baby Jake for a few days.â Janice didnât know what to make of that.
âWeâll be redecorating your room just like thisâ, she told her, smiling at the pink and frilly dĂ©cor of Jakeâs nursery. Janice scrambled to her feet. âNNNGGGHH!â She went to the gate of the play-pen. Of course she couldnât open it. She shook the side bars. âNNNGGGHHHH!â The women just smiled. âThanks for the decoratorâs contact numbersâ, her mother said to Jakeâs mother. âDoes that baby bouncer need to be attached to a beam or can it be attached to any part of the ceiling?â, she asked. Janice continued to shake the bars of the pen realizing that long-term plans were being made for her.
The women went over to Jakeâs baby dresses hanging on a rail. âWe should discuss dress designs for her new wardrobeâ, her mother said as they went back to the kitchen.
Janice flopped back down on her thickly nappied bottom and blubbered. Jake saw she was suc-king hard on her soother. He wished there was something he could say to console her. Of course, he couldnât actually say anything at all as he dutifully suc-ked on his own soother.
There was nothing much he could tell her anyway other than that there was no point in resisting â she was totally at the mercy of her mother. That probably wouldnât cheer her up.
He couldnât tell her that it was not so bad. Being dependent on nappies and having to waddle around town in the frilliest of baby dresses with lacey nappy covers on show to all was not a nice prospect. At least she was actually a girl. It was far worse for him as he used to be a boy. He froze. He had just thought of himself as someone who âused to beâ a boy. Now he was just as depressed.
He picked up a little ball that he could always bash about when he was frustrated. It just made a tinkling sound no matter how hard it was hit so sounded from outside like he was happily playing with his toys.
Janice saw what he was doing. He handed her another ball. She punched it as hard as she could with her mittened hand. It tinkled too. They both sat there in their thick nappies and baby dresses punching the balls. Their mothers could hear the tinkling from the kitchen and smiled at each other.
(well predicted babycakes!)
