Mortonâs was a big clothing store with good childrenâs and babiesâ departments. And the following afternoon Sinead met Patricia and Sarah at the front doors.
âHi girls.â
âHi.â
âCome on, you two,â cried an excited Sarah, âhurry up!â And she led the way inside, turned sharp right, and ran to a rack of jackets on the wall.
âLook! Hereâs the one I told you about. See? Isnât it pretty?â
Patricia took one down. It would come about to Archieâs hips. It was made of lightweight vinyl, the top half yellow, the bottom half and the drawstring hood pink. It had little pink buttons at the front.
âThatâs cute,â said Sinead. âOkay, letâs see what we can find to go with it.â
They spent over an hour in the shop, and when they came out they were carrying four bagfuls of stuff. As they were coming out they saw Millie and her mother and Lily on the other side of the street.
âI bet their off to the baby shop,â laughed Sarah.
They took a bus back to Patriciaâs, and while she and Sinead made some food, Sarah unpacked the clothes and laid them out on the sofa. They had found a pretty long-sleeved round-necked purple jumper, and nice warm tights to match. The only pink pleated skirt they could find was a little short, but with the tights that didnât really matter â it would just look super-cute. They had bought two packs of pink panties, a pair of black vinyl Mary Janes, pink and purple bunches and ribbons, and a fine silver necklace with a letter âAâ pendant.
âI think heâll look lovely,â said Patricia, sipping her coffee. âI think we should let him wear just a little subtle makeup, donât you, Sinead?â
âDefinitely. Just some blusher and a little pale pink lip gloss. Weâll do his nails and maybe curl his hair a little.â
âGive him a few pink highlights, maybe?â
âWhy not? Heâll look as pretty as a picture!â
âThatâs a funny saying, isnât it, when you see some of the crap people put in frames.â
âAll right â as pretty as a⌠I dunno, a pumpkin?â
âAs pretty as a poppy!â suggested Sarah.
Back in town, Millie her mother were in search of baby accessories. Myra had willingly offered to underwrite any clothes or equipment Megan or Laura purchased, but in the end it was agreed theyâd split it between them, and Myra and Laura would come and help at Millieâs party.
âIâm glad Laura found those lovely rubber baby pants,â said Megan said, as they wandered around the store.
âYes, mummy. And did you see the dummies she ordered? Great big ones!â
âOh, no I didnât! We can tie them on with some pretty ribbon, canât we?â
âNo we donât need to! Cos Mrs Nimmo said they have special straps that he wonât be able to undo, so theyâll stop him being noisy and rude!â
Her mother stared at her. âAre you sure?â
âYes, mummy! She showed me the picture!â
âOh, well, how clever! The things they have for babies these days⌠Now, heâll need a bottle, and some extra-large nappies⌠Here we are⌠âfor kids up to age 11â. Perfect! Then weâll need wipes, cream and powderâŚâ
âAre we even going to change him, mummy?â
âWell if he wets his nappy, weâll have to, wonât we?â
âOh, I do hope he does! My friends would be so happy⌠But I âspect heâll just go to the boring toiletâŚâ
âIt depends, darling. I think his mummy has found some special reins for himâŚâ
âReins? Oh, I hoped heâd have reins! Then we can take him round the garden, or out for a walk! ButâŚwhy are they special?â
âBecause he wonât be able to take them off, Millie dear, and they have a special chain that you can attach to things â like, for instance, the tree at the end of our gardenâŚâ
Millieâs eyes widened. A smile spread over her face. âGosh, mummyâŚthatâs super cleverâŚâ
