My Favorite Things - Alternate Universe Edition

This is not really a story but more a little flight of fancy. I've always loved "The Sound of Music" and "My Favorite Things" is one of the most iconic songs in the movie.

I can't be the only one here who has heard the line "Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes" and then mentally replaced the "girls" with "boys."

So, with profuse apologies to Dame Julie Andrews for butchering her beloved lyrics, I thought it would be fun to imagine what the whole song might be like if it catered to the audience here.

Thank you! 😘  I thought it was a fun idea and hope people enjoyed it.

Several other cute snippets and phrases rhyming with "things" didn't make the final cut such as:

… dainty gold rings
… heart-shaped earrings
… satiny strings
 
But I wanted to keep it to six verses like the original. (The original actually has just three verses but they are repeated.)

Sadly, this verse didn't make it either, but I think it's a sweet picture:

A boy in a toy store in black Mary Janes
Entranced by the dolls and ignoring the trains
The frilly creations tug at his heart strings

Forgot to mention earlier, but this post was intended to be in honor of the International Transgender Day of Visibility (3/31/24)

I am very happy that such stalwarts of these boards as you appreciated it. I personally got more satisfaction writing it than anything else I’ve written lately. Once I got going it practically wrote itself. I kept imagining Julie Andrews singing these lyrics and her visual acting that might go along with it… it just made me smile.

I was happy with the way it turned out. I was trying to keep as many of the original sounds as possible. I think my favorite line is the one about “French poodles” lol. I think it’s just such an adorable image. “Poodles” was an unexpectedly cute rhyme with the original “strudels.”

And Sandra B., to your comment, if I think of another song or poem adaptation that seems like a good fit, I will definitely try and and work with it.
